DS9, now up to 5x12

Sat down to watch the next episode on my Netflix DVD and ended up watching the entire disc. This show! I never feel like watching it, so it sits for weeks. But then when I actually do decide to keep going, I can't stop. I need to remember how much I enjoy it for the next time I put off continuing. The last 2 episodes I watched on the disc were really great, so I shall talk about them.

5x11 - "The Darkness and The Light"
Summary: Someone is killing off Kira's old Resistance friends. The Cardassian who ended up being the one killing them was fascinating. The way he talked was so lyrical and creepy, as if he were narrating a fable, referring to Kira as an "it." Crazy Cardassians = some really interesting crazy.

"The creature's diseased mind cannot understand its plight. Its imagination is too limited to perceive the truth."

I love these episodes that get into the history & issues with the occupation. The best scenes are always one on one conversations between a Cardassian and Kira. A few of the moments reminded me a bit of season 1's "Duet," with that sort of quiet intensity. Um, except this time the Cardassian side of the equation was not exactly sane.

Kira: "For fifty years, you raped our plant and you killed our people. You lived on our land and you took the food out of our mouths, and I don't care whether you held a phaser in your hand or you ironed shirts for a living. You were all guilty, and you were all legitimate targets!"

And then Crazycakes Cardassion tried to cut the baby out of Kira. "The creature slept, dreaming its dark dreams and happy to be out of the light." Yikes.

5x12 - "The Begotten"
Summary: Kira goes into labor, and Odo is given a newborn Changeling. Odo wants to raise & teach it with compassion, not how Dr. Mora experimented on him. Odo has issues. OH ODO. I always thought Dr. Mora & Odo's relationship was interesting (and a bit fucked up), so I was glad to see such a large portion of the episode devoted to it. Odo was so happy when the newborn started responding to him. OH ODO.

Quark to Odo: "If you're happy, there's something very wrong in the world. The center cannot hold."

But then it started dying! And Odo was so sad. OH ODO. But it went into his body as it died and now Odo can shapeshift again. So...yay, I guess. I'm glad Odo doesn't have to be a Solid anymore, because damn, he hated it. But that was kind of heartbreaking and bittersweet. It's also good Odo got a little closure about his resentment of Dr. Mora. I'd like to see them attempt to have a relationship.

Kira had the baby and gave it to the O'Briens. Now she & Odo will bond over their lack of babies.

(As always, please don't spoil me.)
