3D without the Glasses

Nothing new in this post. A quick disclaimer, I need to post now so I can test my WP to LJ cross-post functionality. Also, the reason for this post is “The Avatar”, which I went to see last night with my wife and some friends.

The after movie discussion came around to the 3D effects within the movie, and I couldn’t wait for 3D without the glasses. I read earlier this year about a laptop capable of displaying 3D without glasses, this may or may not be the right laptop but its available now or from Toshiba Matsushita Display. The current issue with 3D without glasses is two-fold. The first is price. The Sharp laptops with 3D capabilities appear to run between $1000 and $1500 more than similarly configured laptops. The second is viewing angle. On the reviewed models, it was necessary for the user to be at or near the mid-point of the viewing angle. If the angle was offset by too wide of a margin, the 3D image became garbled.

It also appears that 3D without glasses may be coming to the Home Theater segment. While this is just a prototype, imagine the influx of purchasers if Hitachi is able to produce a full 3D home theater system without the need of glasses, viewable from any angle. Personally, I’ll be putting off buying any 3D system until one is available without the glasses.
