A missing scene for a book I read....

Vincent Trent sat on his cot pretending to be alseep. He didn't want to talk to the two men who shared the room in the new barrecks at the moment, and wasn't really paying attention to the conversation they were having anyway. HIs mind was miles away from the upcoming battle with Napolean's forces. They were on a certian person who words still vibrated though his brain.

I hate you! Your behaviour has been despicable.

Vince had felt his heart drop when she had said those words. Not the part about his behaviour, because that certianly had been true. He had been using her to furthur his own cause, which was in this case investigating her brother in a murder case. At first he had pretended to be interested, but now...

She hated him. What was the point anymore anyway? It was becoming clearer by the day that Perry hadn't killed Captian Montyclife and he himself was going to fight a bunch of angry frenchmen. It was seeming unlikely that he would see her anymore. He wasn't delusional, he knew full well there was a good chance that many of the young men in the army would not be returning home, and his chances were as good as theirs.

But he couldn't help hoping to see her one more time, to let her know he had started to love her, that she wasn't just a means to an end anymore. She was his end.

He turned over and closed his eyes, hoping for sleep to come soon so Sophronia's hazel eyes would stop haunting him though he had a good idea that they would continue even then.

I never want to see you again
