A very wise friend, when I told her a cliff note version, and asked her:  What can happen to a great relationship to make it not work? Or that makes someone decide that it isn't worth trying?

Answered:

One would hope that a smart couple would have gotten things like life's ambitions (kids, chucking it all and moving to Tahiti, traveling with the circus, whatever) discussed before it moved to marriage.

I would like to think that a truly committed couple could weather changes that happen during the time of marriage, like illness, job demands, etc. But, not everyone is strong enough to make sacrifices and compromises for the sake of the relationship.

Someone is going to be "the loser" in most of those instances, especially where jobs and money are concerned. To me, the secret would be to accept that I may be the "loser" in the short term, but the relationship will win in the long run.
