Modulate - Skullf**k Ltd 2 CD edition

Apr 26, 2007 00:23

Oh the joys of having to work late into the night. I'm now waiting for a new set of ftp jobs to run so you're getting a third review. Aren't I a busy thing tonight? ;)

The Modulate EP arrived ages ago, I just forgot to put anything down about it.

A lot of people will probably have the initial reaciton of *coughCOMBICHRISTcough*. And while this claim can be made, that's not the only influence you can hear in the mix. I think Modulate has more in common with the likes of Caustic and Dulce Liquido as they all utilise more noise based elements compared to Combichrist's more recent electro direction.

Anyway. The European/US Standard edition contains three original tracks and a number of remixes of the title track. Each stands on it's own as a very good club track, with the Combichrist one bizzarely being the weakest as the two bands styles are so close for this one song. Neikka RPM is probably the most unique and interesting version for the general populace. The non-title tracks, Kommune 1, Digital Alchemy and Electronic Battle Weapon are even better than Skullf**k, just not quite as dancelfoor friendly... so I can see why they aren't the main track for the EP. It certainly bodes well for the album though :)

It's a shame the tracks on the US limited edition weren't more widely available (only 200 copies!) as it contains what could be the best mixes of the lot. Dawn of Ashes and XP8 add a large layer upon layer of detail to their respective mixes making them far more club friendly than the original if that's at all possible. My only gripe? The CD was one of those irritatingly small ones that won't play in any of my CD players, just my work laptop. But that's another rant altogether.

I strongly suggest you get this one. Especially if you can get hold of the US ltd version. It really is worth the effort of tracking it down!
