It has been too long since the series finale... last November? Seeing it last night brought so many reminders of why I like it enough to stay up late, sometimes even watching the just-shown episode repeat.
- Uniforms. I love men in uniforms.
- Denis Leary's big, ugly nose. (He also has a Glare of Messy Death and lots of eyebrow action going on. With hair dye and a British accent [yeah, right], he might make a good Snape.)
- Naturalistic dialog. The characters talk over each other, mix up their words, and break off in the middle of sentences.
- Cursing, smoking, drinking, childish tantrums, and other self-destructive behaviors. It's not pretty, but it's believable, and often funny as hell.
- The self-destructive behavior is also poignant. Characters have incomplete and imperfect understanding of situations, each other and themselves. Very human.
- Courage. I can't imagine running into a burning building or facing the kind of danger firemen do. It's beyond my experience or understanding. That particular character trait is compelling to me.
The characters and dialog crack me up. There's the guy who's never heard of the Hindenberg and who watches Sully cooking "lamb skanks." There's the guy who thinks it would be funny to take a picture of his penis with the femail firefighter's camera while she's out of the room. ("Hurry up!" "Hold on! I'm trying to figure out which is my best side.")
Love this show. It's so dark and raw and masculine, yet the dialog is as sharp and machine-gun rapid as The West Wing. There's probably slash potential, but I don't have a quick eye for that.
