In the three years that I've been tutoring high school mathematics, I often get asked why I do it. It's certainly a time commitment: twice a week, 2 hours a day, every week as long as school is in session. The pay is nominal, and sometimes I want to scream at a kid who's just totally out of it. Every once in a while though, I'm reminded of why I tutor.
Yesterday, I got a card from one of my tutees for New Year's. This happens pretty much every year, but this one's a little special... I'll let it speak for itself.
Dear Albert,
Thank you so much for being my tutor these past years. It's been... almost three years? Something like that. :) I still remember the very first time I had class with you, I was so nervous. But immediately, you made me more comfortable with your kind personality. Thank you for taking the time after class to also ask how I've been doing and for giving me advice in all sorts of areas. It's almost as if I now have a big brother instead of a tutor. yay :)
Once again, thank you for tutoring me & putting up with my incompetence w/ math. I know that, if it hadn't been for you, I would definitely not be where I am today.
