This makes me cry just a little bit inside.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/11/11/nz.text.ap/index.html I cannot believe that any academic establishment would allow "text-speak" to be used in any sort of exam, paper, or piece of graded work.
Why don't we all just start saying "lol" in stead of actually using words then.
As if writing wasn't becoming a dying art already, now we're just going to pull the damn plug on it altogether?
I'll be the first to admit that when text messaging on my phone, you're damn right I'll use text-speak... Do you have any idea how many times you have to hit those stupid tiny buttons just to spell out remember? Not to mention the second you have to wait so that you can hit the same key again. I'm an American and you can bet the farm I'm impatient as hell... but honestly writing?!? It is not to much to write the word text instead of txt. It's one letter people.
Is it not enough that people have seemed to allow their students to graduate without the ability to spell properly in general?
"Shure" instead of "sure" for example, and let's not get into the age old fiasco of their, there, and they're. That's hardly worth it anymore.
I can understand when people don't comprehend the meanings of certain words or their proper usage... confusing verbose and locquacious, I can accept that. Even typing the as teh whilst in a hurry. I do that myself, I am a typo queen, to be honest... but I know how to spell ridiculous, sure, and other entirely too simple words to screw up as people do now.
Perhaps this mean that I am getting old. Perhaps it means that I am obsessive compulsive and anal retentive. Perhaps, though, it simply means that I love language and writing and it breaks my heart to see people butchering it in the one last great preserve of the thing.
If there was one place that I though, perhaps, the English language was inviolable... it was in Academia. Apparently, I was woefully mistaken.
*sigh*
Good bye Modern English... apparently, we - here in the world - have decided to return to our roots... Early Modern English in which practically everything is spelled foe-net-uh-kullee.
