"You are staring, Mr Malfoy."
Draco grinned. Putting his quill down he folded his hands together under his chin, supporting his head so that he could continue looking at Severus. He knew it annoyed the older man, but didn’t let such a fact put him off. Draco had grown up watching Severus, and had always liked what he saw. Severus didn't let such trivialities as peoples' opinions of him deter him in any way from his own course in life. And contrary to the whining of the Gryffindorks, Severus didn't play favourites. He judged everyone on merit.
Once won, his respect was hard lost, and Draco had no doubt that once it was lost it would never return. But he didn't let that worry him; he'd worked hard to win Severus' respect, and wouldn't do anything to risk it.
Within Hogwarts, Severus was the most important person in Draco's world. A wealth of knowledge with a sarcastic streak a mile wide, Severus didn't care that Draco was Lucius Malfoy's son - he made Draco work for his attention just as hard as anyone else.
"Snap yourself out of your over-romanticised dreaming this moment, and finish your essay."
"I wasn't dreaming, romanticised or otherwise," Draco felt the need to defend himself as he blew the ink dry and stood up to take the essay to Severus. He'd been taking Further Potions for a year now, and hoped to study for his mastery when he completed his NEWTs. Not that the idea of spending a further three years working in close contact with Severus was swaying his decision in any way, shape or form. Besides; Draco knew that Severus wanted him to stay at Hogwarts just as much as he wanted to stay himself. Especially as Potter had just been accepted onto the Defence Against the Dark Arts Mastery program, and Severus would need an ally in his constant battle against the Brat Who Lived. McGonagall had pulled strings to have Harry remain on the Potions NEWT when Severus resumed teaching it, and Severus had sniped about nothing else for the past year.
"You wore a simpering expression; you were dreaming. Dreaming will not write your essays or take your notes. It will not sit your NEWTs or…"
"…Or brush my teeth. Yes, I know this lecture inside out, Severus. You're just sour that I finished the essay before you finished your grading."
"I am not sour." Severus sniffed haughtily. "I am of an eternally sunny demeanour."
Grinning, Draco held out the essay, snapping it back as soon as Severus reached for it. This was a dangerous game, but he played it twice more before Severus growled and fixed him in a cold glare. "What happened to your eternally sunny demeanour?"
"Do not test me, brat."
Leaning forwards, Draco rested the essay on the top of Severus' grading, making a mental note to tease Potter over his 'D' later on. Brushing his lips ever so slightly over Severus', Draco grinned. "That’s much more like my Severus!"
