Her heart was stuck in her throat. She could feel the sweat dripping from her brow. "Please don't let them find me" were the words going through her frantic thoughts over and over. She held her breath so that no noise would be made.
"I think she went this way!" a commanding voice yelled out.
The sound of foot steps, breaking twigs and rustling bushes soon passed. She could breathe again. A slight sense of relief passed over her cold body. She knew that they would be back to find her. There was no time to sit around; morning was coming and would break her cover from the shadows. She needed to find some sort of shelter to keep warm. She was soaked from the rain that evening and didn't want to catch her death. She had already escaped that once tonight. She started off east to find some sort of haven...
Cameron Donovan was a girl of 21. Everyone who met her wanted to be her or be with her. Her blue eyes sparkled like diamonds, her blonde hair was neatly kept and never out place with curls that hung loosely around her delicate face. Her stature was that of a beautiful crane. She had spent her entire life in the suburbs, had never done anything wrong, was a straight A student, and extremely active in the community. Her close knit group of friends at the university appointed her as "the leader of the pack". If anything went wrong, she would be the one resolve the issue.
This was Cameron's last year at the university. Winter break seemed so far off, but in all actuality it was just a jump and a skip away. She already had made her plans to go up north with her boyfriend of 7 years. Engagement was what she was hoping for this Christmas. Her bags were packed, tickets bought, and arrangements made. The plan was to stop by her family's for the weekend, and then her and Denver were hightailing it up north to spend the rest of the vacation together in solitude intimately in front of a fire. Each time she thought on this, a feeling of overwhelming excitement spread through out her body. Her dreams from childhood were going to come true, at least she hoped.
The sound of the alarm pierced the darkness. Cameron rolled over and aimlessly reached for the clock. 4 AM is such an ungodly time to wake up, but she was ready to leave the comfort of her bed for her vacation. She jumped out of bed, took her shower, got dressed, and grabbed her bags. Denver was to be there any minute. She waited. Time was going by so slowly. Denver was already 15 minutes late. This was very unlike him. Cameron picked up her phone and dialed. The phone just kept ringing and ringing. Maybe he was in the shower and was just running behind. Another 15 minutes passed and finally there was a knock on her door.
Cameron flung the door open. "Where have you been? I hope we don't miss our flight."
"Well that's an interesting way of greeting someone." Denver said with a chuckle. His brown eyes twinkled as he stood there looking at Cameron.
"You know I can't stay mad at you. I'm all ready to go. I just have to grab my bags, and we can say goodbye to this place for a full week!"
Denver took the bags from Cameron's hands. "What kind of a gentleman would I be if I let you carry your own bags?"
Cameron just smiled softly and blushed. That's one thing she loved about Denver. Other than he chiseled physique, big brown eyes, and jet black hair, he was a gentleman. He was always opening doors, carrying things, giving her his jacket when it was cold. The little stuff is what mattered. He had always been like that, and she loved him for it.
They got into the car and took off for the airport.
"So is everything ok with your cell phone? I tried calling but there was no answer."
"I must have been in the shower. I wanted to make sure I smelled all pretty for the girl I love." Cameron gave a wink and smiled. "You wouldn't want me going to visit your family smelling like a dirty animal, would you? I can get on all fours and roll around in some mud before we get there if you wish." Denver then started to impersonate a pig and nuzzled Cameron.
"Stop that!" Cameron couldn't stop laughing. "No. I'm sure if you were to do that mom and dad would be shocked. Plus you wouldn't be allowed to sit on the sofa. They'd probably keep you out back with the dogs. And you sir, are far from being a dog."
"That's right baby. I have a master to keep me in check."
"Oh ha ha. Very funny. Just drive so we don't miss our flight."
