Ann, 2001 does have an interesting story to it, it just doesn't have a lot of speech. There is only 45 minutes of speech in the entire film, its an entirely visual movie. Kubrick conveys the story, the themes and ideas through what is on the screen and does an amazing job of it. Does it make sense the first time you see it? No it doesn't and it shouldn't. Especially when you don't see the whole thing. It's a movie you really need to see in the right frame of mind, not going into it trying to see 2001 the greatest Sci Fi movie ever made. I really didn't enjoy it my first time, but gave it another try and was surprised.
It's subtle, something Kubrick was NEVER good at. Look how amazingly blatant Full Metal Jacket is during the Vietnam half of the film. The movie just hits you over the head with nonsensical dialogue. 2001 lets the viewer think about what is going on, what it means, and why it is happening.
But whatever, it's just a movie.
And speaking of movies, I can't believe Fairenheit 9-11 looks decent. After Bowling I had lost all hope for Moore. Now to find some fellow angry whiney liberals to go see it.
