Speed Dating for Dogs???

The first Saturday of the month these two friends of mine open their home in the morning and do a gourmet pancake breakfast for whoever wants to drop in.   Each month there is a theme of something to bring and they then donate the items to the women and children's shelter.  Today was shoes, next month is shorts, and after that, I think school supplies.  If you don't have time to shop for the item of the month, she has a tip jar and all the money goes to buy more of whatever is the item of the month.

We were standing around visiting after breakfast and the two women who own the home have two dogs but one of them is a golden retriever named Cal and looks just like the guy on the right up there.  Their property is huge and goes down into a gully and up a steep slope across from where they live so they don't have it all fenced.  One of the girls said she was going to try and find a new home for Cal because they didn't have a big enough fenced yard for him to run, and every night when they come home he gets out and runs and might be gone all night and they worry about him.

These other people were there and said that one of their dogs died 3 months ago and now every time the husband and wife both leave their only dog goes down near the gate and howls and their neighbors have been complaining.

One thing let to another and the other people had their dog waiting for them in their car.  They said lets see if they get along.  So basically they had a speed date.  The husband went out with both dogs in the vacant lot next door and played ball with the two dogs for about 20 minutes.  The other dog was a golden retriever/golden lab mix.  They are both boys and both about 5 years old.  Other than the initial smelling of butts, those boys played ball with that man and ran and had fun and were like old friends.

Long story longer, the husband and wife said they'd happily take Cal home so he could keep their dog company.  They have one fenced acre that the dogs can run and play to their hearts content and several other acres of hills that the husband runs the dog on every day.

What a happy ending.  It was so sweet.  I kind of thought of it as speed dating because they said they showed their dog to a few others and they immediately did not get along, but with Cal it was different.  I am so happy that they will both now have a dog friend and a human who will love them and do stuff with both of them every day.

What an awesome morning.  Oh, and the pancakes were good too.
