Ode to Umbrella
When you first came to be
when you began to thumb your metallic nose at the sky
vulgar-tongued cabbies in London (the ones sitting in black wheelboxes
staring at a horse’s ass all day) cursed you heartily
for creating a shelter that made them redundant
It has been a long while indeed, umbrella
you have been bearing the rhythmic attack of droplets
you are weeping by the time we get inside
maybe I abuse you, umbrella
after all
you endure the wet attack of April
I stand under you, cursing the sky
not remembering to say thank you
for opening your arms to protect me
it is true
that I never appreciate you more than when you are not there
when I walk shivering, exposed
a pathetic wet creature
we are arrogant
we so easily forget
that we only control our own thin layer of the earth
and you are all I have to go outside
and face the rage of the fickle skies
