[I went ahead and just used the families we were introduced to in S3 - but as you’ll see, Ianto’s and Jack’s attitudes are a bit different! =D]

being counted

“This is going to be a disaster,” Ianto moaned.

“Yes, yes it is,” Jack agreed.

“You’re supposed to tell me it’ll be fine,” Ianto sighed, setting out the last of the plates. At least this was a neutral space, more or less - it was a sometime-safe-house that they’d borrowed for the gathering, since neither he nor Jack had enough space at their places. That meant that if things went sour, technically they could make an escape. Un-technically, Ianto’s manners would probably prevent him from fleeing a gathering he was hosting. Besides, someone needed to lock up (and ensure homicide did not occur).

“But it won’t be,” Jack said. “It’s definitely a disaster of some magnitude, question’s just how much. So, on a scale of blowfish-on-blow to end-of-the-world, where would you rate this?”

“Approximately extinction-event level,” Ianto replied without missing a beat. He inspected the table, and then the living room. It all looked fine. In approximately ten minutes, they were about to host both his family and Jack’s. He’d never met Jack’s family (apparently his daughter was older than Ianto and they were pretending she was Jack’s sister) and Jack had never met his (dear god, Johnny was going to be insufferable the moment he set eyes on Jack) and yet they’d somehow been talked into hosting a joint Christmas party. Ianto had always been of the opinion that the job was giving him ulcers. He now knew that anything he’d felt on the job was a pale imitation of what had just been incited in him.

The doorbell rang.

“It’s not too late to make a break for it out the back window,” Jack suggested.

“Smile and play nice if it kills you,” Ianto said.

“It might,” Jack said. “Where’s my gun, I could make it happen.”

Ianto kicked him and opened the door, ushering in his sister and her family. Johnny, predictably, stared unabashedly at Jack, who gave him his best movie-star smile in response. As Rhiannon exclaimed over the décor, Ianto sidled up to Jack.

“Remind me again why we’re doing this,” he hissed.

Jack gave him a small smile and squeezed his hand. “Because I’m done hiding.”
