Okay, so.

Being sexy =/= being powerful. Attracting someone =/= having power or control over them.

Don't get me wrong. When someone is attracted to you and they go out of their way to get your attention, do nice things for you, show off their own best sides in hope of getting you to reciprocate, that can certainly be a nice feeling. Most people find it validating, and yes, it CAN be a way to get the other party to do stuff for you that they'd not be willing to otherwise.

BUT. When someone is attracted to you and they follow you around, make inappropriate comments to you or about you, paw you, put pressure on you or worse, that is NOT nice.

And here's the thing: the object of desire doesn't get to choose. There's no way they can ensure that only the positive kind of attention will be paid to them. There's no way they can ensure that NO attention will be paid to them when they're not in a mood to receive it.

So please, zip your lips around all that bullshit about how being traditionally attractive is the direct female equivalent of being badass, 'kay?

open letter, sexism
