If Harry can use any owl to send a message to Sirius Black, why can't the people who are searching for Sirius use an owl to find him?
Why wouldn't you "Stupefy" Peter Pettigrew or otherwise freeze him up so he couldn't escape? Snape makes several people float up to the Hogwarts castle, so it's not like it would have made Pettigrew too difficult to carry.
It's amazing how bad wizards are at investigating crime. Do they not have fingerprints? I suppose Diggory isn't an investigator, but asking someone if they saw something in an area of almost total darkness is stupid. He probably would have saved his son's life if he had just asked Winky if she KNEW who had conjured the dark mark.
A friend of mine made the point that it was stupid to use the Triwizarding tournament as a way to get Harry. What exactly was the point of waiting until the end of the third task? "Moody" could have turned anything into a portkey at any time and transported himself and Potter to Lord Voldemort anytime they were alone in his office. Had Voldemort killed Potter it would have had to be determined that "Moody" had put the cup in the maze and that Potter and Diggory had disappeared. "Moody" would have had to disappear then anyway. As for interacting with the other students, there is never any mention of the foreign students attending classes at Hogwarts. It would seem they eat meals there and then return to their ship/carriage. The tournament also seems a poor reason not to hold the Quidditch Cup. The expectation is that ONE Hogwarts student is going to participate in three tasks on 3 days, not even on Saturdays when most Quidditch is played. As it turns out, you've got two teams that have their seekers in the Triwizarding tournament, but I'm sure students from the visiting schools could have subbed in. That would have really worked towards international cooperation. Also, it's never explained why Crouch, Sr., didn't attend the Quidditch World Cup final. Sure, the seat wasn't empty, but I don't think Winky really needed a seat.
