And now for some heresy

Rashomon has a lot of interesting ideas but doesn't really execute them very well. That's right, I said Kurosawa doesn't know how to make his ideas work.  It's all over the top, full of lots of maniacal laughter, and goofy characters; it's difficult to take seriously. After all, a dead man tells his story of how he was killed. It's supposed to be all about human nature and how people lie, but it doesn't really work. It's a neat idea but not well played. There are some scenes that are so obviously "epic" that you want to love them, but at the same time, they feel forced and "look at me! I'm epic!".

Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette are amazing.
