Matchmaker

There was something about school functions that caused a rush of electricity to pulse through his veins, burning hot like adrenaline. It might have been that he was crammed into a tight space with at least a hundred humans but that justification always felt somewhat like a copout to Jasper.

There was just something about a room brimming with hope and expectation and desire that sang to him. Because that’s what school functions always started as. Everyone showed up with an idea of how they wanted the night to go.

Sometimes Jasper wished for a moment he could have Edward’s ability just so he would be able to hear the possibilities that were driving the rush of emotions that skittered over him like fire ants, crawling into every pore and nearly becoming a part of him.

He sidestepped a tiny blonde that nearly stumbled into him because she was whirling with so much eagerness.

“Hurry! I wanna get in line before everyone else!” she called over her shoulder in a tinny rush. Her gaze flicked momentarily to Jasper, who was watching her with open curiosity, and she blushed, ducking away and heading for the kissing booth. A larger brunette ambled after her with an entertained expression. She sucked on her fingers, which were sticky with cotton candy.

“You’ll get for five dollars worth of kiss no matter when you get in line,” the girl mumbled good-naturedly, not even conscious of Jasper’s presence.

The school fair was his favourite of school events. It didn’t always end with the prominently bitter taste of disappoint and only a tiny flicker of satisfaction. People tended to leave this event in around the same mind frame, if not a little less energetic and a little more bored.

“Having a fun?”

Jasper made a gentle humming noise in his throat and nodded. Alice settled beside him and the cloud of emotion around her practically glowed.

“Me too,” Alice chirped and took his hand in her own, squeezing it tightly. Her eyes scanned over the crowd as her fingers caressed their way through his, entwined themselves with him. She shifted minutely as a sudden thought came to her and her mood sharpened with mischief. “Have you seen Edward?”

While her tone was innocent enough, Jasper knew not to trust the steely playful edge that was suddenly just as much a part of her as the contented glow. Her eyes twinkled and he bit down a smile. She had seen something entertaining.

“No, I haven’t,” Jasper replied neutrally and cast Alice a quick interested look.

The female’s unnaturally beautiful face bloomed into a colourful smile and she tugged at his hand. “I’ll show you,” she laughed and began dragging him through the crowd.

---

When Alice and Jasper reached their destination, he was unable to bite down the laugh that the sight of Edward elicited. He looked undeniably sour, sat in a chair beside a girl that was boiling over with nervous glee. Edward was pointedly ignoring the woman across from them, an older lady draped in scarves and beads that was speaking in a hushed rush. The booth they were behind had a large sign above it. Jasper absorbed the words and looked at Alice with wide surprised eyes.

“Really,” he commented, entertained.

“I know!” she enthused, swaying from side to side with impish delight. “Poor Edward had no idea it was coming!”

The pair turned back to Edward in unison as he looked over at them. His eyes burned with irritation.

Have fun! Jasper thought, overly cheerful, and did nothing to help him.

The Matchmaker needed to make her match after all.

---

Jasper loitered casually in the empty men’s washroom, keeping track of the time so his ‘bathroom break’ would be believable. The action felt somewhat unnecessary as he had only really been in contact with members of his family, but he needed to be safe. He never knew who could be watching him.

Glancing at his watch, Jasper figured he had been gone long enough, when the door opened and a veritable black cloud came skulking into the room. Raising an eyebrow, Jasper watched as Edward moved to the center of the room and stopped. His eyes flicked briefly to Jasper and he glared.

The childish action practically goaded Jasper into humming ’Matchmaker’ in his mind. While no one else would ever hear the tune, he knew that Edward was hearing the song clear as a bell.

“Funny,” Edward sniped.

Jasper stepped closer to him and his lips lifted in a pleasant smile. “For me, well I wouldn’t holler if he were as handsome as anything!” the blond sang quietly, verbally picking up where his thoughts had left off.

Edward frowned in response, clearly not finding the joke funny. Jasper’s singing ceased and the pair engaged in a staring match, Edward following Jasper’s thoughts while Jasper followed the ebb and flow of Edward’s emotions.

“May I ask how you ended up at the Matchmaker Booth to begin with?” Jasper inquired suddenly, though the question was in no way sudden for Edward. He had seen it coming.

Edward shrugged. “Coincidence,” he murmured. “The matchmaker saw me passing through the line, assumed I was trying to join, and called me over.”

“And you couldn’t refuse?” Jasper countered with no lack of amusement. His eyes were wide and bright and Edward’s mood became suspiciously defensive. His jaw locked as he refused to answer the question.

Jasper laughed, a low ringing sound. “Did the matchmaker choose well at least?” he teased and painted the room in a light wash of desire. Edward’s eyes widened slightly as the emotion hit him in his stomach. He dropped his gaze to Jasper’s lips with an intense inhuman focus.

“I’ve had better,” he conceded, smirking. Jasper smiled, pleased at the compliment. He enjoyed Edward’s company. He didn’t love the vampire. Not the same way he loved Alice, anyway, but he enjoyed him. An eternity of monogamy felt a little excessive to both Jasper and Alice. Edward was Jasper’s conclusion to this problem. He had yet to find out who Alice’s was.

Humming again, Jasper stepped forward until he and Edward were nearly chest to chest and grabbed a tight hold of the other’s chin, brushing his thumb over the vampire’s lips. His eyes were transfixed.

Matchmaker matchmaker find me a find...

Jasper’s song trailed away as he was distracted by the lust curling around him like little flames.

“Catch me a... catch,” Edward finished for him in a thick voice and his eyes seemed to smile as Jasper’s hand slid back along his jaw to firmly grip the nape of his neck.

Edward tilted his head, leaning in for a kiss, but Jasper held him back. He watched Edward with an unnervingly unreadable expression.

But reading facial expressions really never could compare to reading minds.

Holding Edward’s head firmly in place, Jasper leaned forward, gripping the vampire’s bottom lip between his teeth and tugging hard.

For amusement, he thought pointedly and the subtle shift in Edward’s mood confused him. The other suddenly became irritated. He pulled free of the kiss.

“I think we’re past the point where you need to clarify your intentions with every kiss,” Edward informed him, put out.

“Of course,” Jasper agreed with a nod, “My apologies for offending you.” The apology was open and too sincere to be anything but mockery.

The teasing comment was rewarded with a pointed look. But other than that Edward ignored it, instead lifting his hands and gripping Jasper’s shoulders, pulling him closer. Jasper couldn’t find any reason to resist the movement. So he allowed himself to be dragged into a crashing kiss of teeth and lips and painful gripping.

The kiss stopped suddenly as a thought crossed Jasper’s mind, causing Edward to freeze. Their lips still touching but not moving, they stared each other in the eyes. Edward narrowed in accusation. Jasper smiled and suddenly became very compromising.

Please?

Funny that Jasper’s unexpected agreeable mood would transfer to Edward.

The hand holding Edward’s neck gripped harder and Jasper pressed, encouraging the boy to his knees. He loved how good of a sport Edward was.

Edward was just beginning to fiddle with Jasper’s buckle when the mouth watering scent of a human distracted them both. Their heads whipped to the door in unison and Jasper made a sound of disappoint in the back of his throat.

When Mike Newton came strolling into the washroom Jasper was at a urinal doing up his buckle and Edward was washing his hands in the sink.

Later? Jasper thought as he finished with his buckle and approached the sink. He met Edward’s gaze in the mirror and the other vampire smiled at him, eyes nearly black.

“I’ll see you later, Jazz,” he intoned casually and slowly made his way to the door.

Wonderful.

“Yeah sure,” Jasper called after him, a smirk in his voice, and began washing his hands. He smiled, a small curve of his lips, at Mike Newton when the other came to the sink beside him. The air was bright with Mike Newton’s hopes for the rest of the night.

“Are you having a good evening?” Jasper asked conversationally and ignored the surprise he received in return.

Mike lathered his hands in soap. “Uh... yeah,” he said, not unfriendly, but definitely uncertain, and offered up a tentative smile of his own. The strange encounter seemed to be lifting his hopes until the atmosphere was like a hot air balloon, warm and free.

“Me too,” Jasper murmured as he reached for a paper towel. Drying his hands, Jasper observed Mike with a thoughtful expression and he considered what could have the boy so hopeful. He thought of Alice taking his hand in her own, warm and dainty. He mused over the girls rushing to line up for a booth. And he remembered Edward on his knees. This was why he loved school events.

The possibilities were endless. Someone always left with a warm bubble of satisfaction in their stomach.

With a final nod at Mike, Jasper exited the washroom, catching sight of Edward lingering at the end of the hall with a raised eyebrow.

Tonight, he would be the one to leave satisfied.

And that was a satisfying thought indeed.
