Ooh... this is Very Exciting. I love the tone and the sense of both apprehension and anticipation in this chapter. This is utterly fascinating. Everyone seemed quite in-character... and the hints concerning Gideon are certainly... interesting. Really looking forward to the next bit.
I'm sorry this section killed you, but it was certainly a joy to read. Love the continual call backs (hints? red herring feed?) to Gideon. Love that Hotch is also employing Gideon's tricks- the unsub wants Reid's name out there? We aren't going to give it to him. And see what happens next.
Good luck with the traveling! Can't wait to see what's next!
Thank you. I have off days sometimes, where the character voices just seem to vanish for a bit, and I sort of have to work to get them back. Glad this came out alright anyway. ;)
Great work as always! And I agree with Garcia, nobody should hear about something like the explosion the way she did. I like that you keep me in my toes! I never know where are you taking this to, which is delightful when done well (as you've been doing) :D.
I have to give credit for Gideon quoting Sherlock Holmes before I did. The writers had him use that exact quote in at least one episode, but it wasn't a bookend quote, so not as obvious. But what's not to love about The Great Detective? In nearly all his incarnations.
Last night I was compulsively checking everywhere - hoping against hope that you'd updated.
As always, great writing! It's certainly not a struggle to read. And the character voices are dead on - I can hear them as I'm reading.
Contrary to what Rossi may think, he doesn't spend a lot of time consciously thinking about Jason Gideon, but every once in a while he sees the long shadow flickering in the eyes of his team members, even Rossi's. And sometimes, when he looks at Jack, he remembers Haley being pregnant, bantering about naming him Gideon Hotchner.
Gideon. Mighty warrior.
Hotch remembers a lot from those baby naming books.
Aaron means mountain of strength.
Spencer means dispenser. With all the information Reid gives out, somehow it fits.
And, like Reid, Hotch remembers the things Gideon used to say, his lessons on profiling, the authors he used to quote.
Pouring another cup of water, Hotch closes his eyes.Gideon casts a very long shadow, doesn't he? He's been present throughout the story, and I guess now we know why

Thank you very much. I was really uncertain how this chapter would fly for readers for a few reasons. Ultimately it's a ratchet down from the same level of intensity as the last chapters, which needed to be done without ratcheting down too much and that balance kept getting screwy in my mind. Pacing is a silent killer, lol.
