Tillie was a 2005 graduate from Oakridge High School in Muskegon. Throughout her high school career, she was a three season athlete, in Honor Society, was in the top 10 of her class, and was also elected Homecoming Queen. Tillie was also the freshmen volleyball coach in 2006, along with being employed at Wesco, and at The Hop daycare in North Muskegon. Her plans were to transfer from Baker College, and begin attending Muskegon Community College this fall. Tillie planned on receiving her general education credits from MCC, and continuing on to Cornerstone University, for a degree in Childrenâs Ministry.
However, on June 18, 2006, Tillie was diagnosed with a rare illness called Guillain-Barre Syndrome. GBS is a disorder in which the body's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. No one yet knows why Guillain-Barré strikes some people and not others, or what sets the disease in motion. What scientists do know, however, is that the body's immune system begins to attack the body itself, causing what is known as an autoimmune disease. In some cases, such as Tillieâs, this disease can become a medical emergency, leaving the patient completely paralyzed. Although Tillie has begun the long road to recovery, she is still having some difficulties, finances being a major concern. Between spending a week in the ICU, to medications and copays, round-the-clock care, physical, occupational, and speech therapy, along with many other contributing factors, Tillie and her family have been left with outrageous medical bills. We, as friends and family of Tillieâs, feel God has blessed us by placing this amazing young lady in our lives, and we feel it is now our responsibility to shower her with blessings, during this difficult time.
We will be having a benefit for Tillie on Sunday, July 23, from 4-10pm at the Ravenna Conservation Club. $5.00 will get you in and entertained. From 4:15-6:30pm we will be having contemporary Christian music, followed by local, Christian, rock bands from 7-10pm. Throughout the entire night, we will also be raffling off items such as pampered chef products, a free dinner at your favorite restaurant, tanning packages, free memberships at local fitness centers, etc. So come on out and join the fun! Kids 10 and under are in the door free. Food and beverages will also be available; $1.00 for a hot dog and pop, and $0.25 for a bag of chips. All proceeds go towards Tillieâs medical expenses. Weâll hope to see you all there. God bless! J
