Argh.
I've been listening to ABC AM radio (ha, I know) and apparently Alan Brough has gone health-reasons dietary-only-vegan. He had on a female guest who wrote a cookbook called
Rock'n'Roll Vegan, and one of the questions he asked her was about whether alcohol is vegan.
Her answer was ridiculous. She mentioned wine being made in animal skins (wha?) and beer containing yeast (you know what's coming) and apparently if you're a ~particularly strict~ vegan you won't eat yeast because "it is technically a living organism". LIKE A CARROT?!
Veganism. Is about animals. Yeast. Is not. An animal. This is year ten biology. And she is a vegan cookbook author, I would expect her to be at least as informed as the general public about what is and isn't vegan. AND she was on the radio, and now everyone who is listening who attended year ten biology will be thinking she is full of nonsense and may extrapolate this to veganism generally.
Hmm, I am determined to never actually call a call-in show, but I had to send this as an SMS:
"Hi Alan, please remind your cookbook author guest that yeast is a fungus and not an animal, so yeast is therefore VEGAN. Also, she did not mention the issue of many wines being fined using egg, dairy and fish products. The Vegetarian Network Victoria website at VNV.org.au lists vegan alcohol."
Edit: Also she spoke about hormones and antibiotics in dairy production and apparently loads of people have been SMSing/calling in about THAT (dairy farmers saying they do use antibiotics but not hormones).
