So a friend and I decided to goto the Church of Scientology because she had free tickets and our previous plan to go hiking fell through.
She wanted to play a character so borrowed a hippie dress and went as the Open-minded Hippie.
I just went as me, but a curious me.
on the way, i took her up to the Chinese Cultural center. then we caught the buss the rest of the way.
The Church had very nice architecture and design. The people were extremely nice without being sweet.
They put us into a room with about 18 seats to watch the movie. or own little mini-theater.
They start the movie and leave. Just the two of us.
The sound starts and we watch. the sound keeps going and no picture. We both assume that the protagonist is blind so we are experiencing what he is. And he's paralyzed from the waist down.
She and I start talking about this in low tones because we were paranoid the the Church had listening devices and video to gauge our responses.
Eventually, She got up anf went out to ask them about it. The girl helper was extremely embarrassed. I said that I was just enjoying the experience. Which was true. The girl said that she couldn't believe we waited so long. I just smiled.
So we got to watch 15 minutes of the movie over again. NOW the sounds made more sense.
It was about a guy who overcomes a paralyzing injury through replaying a traumatic event in which he unconsciously hears a post hypnotic suggestion. Oh, and the book, Dianetics.
We watch and come out. then a new person takes over the tour. He was nice and answered all our questions. Even engaged us in a bit of debate. At one point, She asks for coffee and we goto the onsite cafe and he brews us a pot of coffee for free.
We stayed there till 11pm. They close at 10.
It was actually a very nice experience.
Oh, did I mention that the buses stop running in Phoenix at 10pm?
When did this start!!??!
So I make a couple calls and another great friend was willing and happy to pick us up.
She and I walk down to an Ihop for food and the Ride shows up almost immediately. we sit and talk some more, ride down to Tempe.
The Ride woman. god I like her.
ANYWAY, we get dropped off and decide to go to a Denny's till 4 talking and discussing more.
I like her a lot too. It's really nice to have someone else who can engage in differences of opinions and appreciates when other do to.
At around 2am, I could tell the strip clubs have closed because some of the strippers and bouncers came it. Always fun.
A fun little adventure. She wants to do the church some more. Basically, we will be play acting till they start asking for money.
The Church of Scientology take numerous psychological avenues which work just fine without all the iconographic wording.
I've been involved with a personal growth group for years as well and I can recognize some tricks from them as well.
What I told our guide was that I an familiar with psychology and various philosophies but that I like other ways of looking at things so as not to get stagnant in hearing about it.
The side effect of having this little adventure is that returning to work, I didn't have the Kill-me-I'm-Boreds at work on Wednesday.
And THAT was worth the price of admission.
