Clearing the Browser

Mar 31, 2011 06:53

Just popping in to clear out all the things I have left open on my iPad browser over the last week. I meant to write up longer material on all of these, but... I didn't. Still, interesting stuff.

In case you somehow missed it, GE can earn $14.2 billion in profits, pay nothing in taxes and receive $3.2 billion in tax credits. But the story wouldn't be perfect if they hadn't followed it up by requiring steep concessions from their union on retirement and health insurance plans, along with pay freezes. Still, I am sure those workers will still have something around $38/hour, so this isn't evil. After all, it is GE's money. They can do with it what they please.

On his way out the door, Bb Herbert got shrill. Not much to add, really. He is right. But no one in the village cares because he is just peddling the same old (accurate) story.

The Rolling Stone published yet another scandalous story about our military. This one involves a team of soldiers who decided to kill non-combatants just because. The Pentagon covered it up, as they do. Everyone will talk about how this will make things harder in the Afghanistan. That presumes the Afghanis didn't already know this, which is...unlikely. What it will do is make it even harder to keep the continuous war train going here at home. Not that overwhelming dissapproval of our continued presence in Afghanistan has actually mattered to anyone in years.

And Dana Milbank documents how Freshmen GOP lawmakers really are bringing an extra strong does of uncompromising crazy, which should be just enough to shut down the Federal government. It isn't like we didn't know the party was crazy before the last election. Well, we would've if "we" would've been paying attention. But they are at least doing all the crazy shite they promised, so score one for following through on campaign promises. If only the ones who were doing so weren't the ones who campaigned on destroying the government. Somehow I am sure that putting Federal employees out of work will be good for the economy, though, so there is that.
