Hey kids, guess what! We don't have to resort to anecdotes to see how people are doing compared to previous generations. We can actually look at data! Fortunately, Elizabeth Warren, the never-to-be-confirmed appointee to the Consumer Protection Agency (and one of those who predicted the housing bubble and yelled to the rooftops about it) has some *gasp* data!!!!1!eleventy-one!
Here is her excerpt for MSNBC.
Here is a summary with all the fun of graphs!
If you prefer it in video form, we can do her interview with "Books of Our Time" where she points out that we actually spend significantly less on food, appliances, and other discretionary items than we used to, but are stuck in a vicious trap on mortgage costs and the like (pre-bubble, but explains a lot of the pain right now as well). There is plenty more. Take an hour and learn something neat- and by neat I mean very, very depressing.
