II. You May Be Infested Without Even Knowing It

A. [VOICE: Filtered from drones, town officials, etc.]Good evening. Now that the excitement of the last few months seems to have calmed for the time being, I have several important questions ( Read more... )

I arrived in Mayfield almost exactly six months ago, although no longer consecutively. As for any sort of sudden deaths, aside from what Mayfield normally has done, there has been nothing of the sort from what I've seen and heard.

Miss Granger. Thank you.

[His tone brightens a little; he appreciates the information.]

If you do hear of anything like this happening, please contact me. It's important.

Are you expecting something of the sort to happen?

Not necessarily, but it's a possibility, particularly given the pattern of arrivals in town.

Before you were abducted to Mayfield, had you heard of that kind of death? There would have been a lot of them, enough to prompt news coverage. The killer became known as Kira.

The way you're speaking someone from your home is capable of such a thing.

[A purse of her lips.] There's sudden, mysterious deaths in part of my world, but it becomes explainable through the eyes of another part of it.

Sorry, I've never heard of any killer by that name. There's been plenty, of course, in the newspapers I read but the name's completely unfamiliar. Possible, of course. We can come from the same planet but come to find the worlds are starkly different.

Yes, I'm afraid that's the case. The means are unusual.

As to the rest... what do you mean?

[It doesn't sound like she's speaking of something as simple as cultural differences.]

I'd think sudden death anywhere would be unusual.

...That's a bit more difficult to explain. You've noticed, haven't you, that many people here come from Earth but the events they experience don't exist in another person's versions?

Yes, precisely, on both counts. Please continue.

I can only assume you're asking about the first part... Very well ( ... )

[There's a long silence. On one hand, he's skeptical of the idea of magic; in order to accept it, he needs to see it performed, and would even prefer to understand how and why it works. On the other, since his abduction, he's seen things that he had no explanation for, and he remembers his conversation with Susan, who indicated that magic was a factor in her own world. His tone is thoughtful when he speaks again, as if he's considered whether or not the Killing Curse could fit into his own case.]

It doesn't sound like we have the same point of origin. The killer I'm speaking of... I suppose what he's doing could be described as a curse, but it isn't a spell, it's... a device. The cause of death, by default, is a heart attack, rather than simple cessation of bodily function. Sometimes they select another cause of death, usually accident or suicide.

It's hard to come to a correct conclusion, when what's happening should be impossible.

[He stops before suggesting that it would be better to alert the police and analysts to the ( ... )

Quite impossible, I've never heard of anything of the sort. You said it was a device? [A pause of the pursing of her lips.] The rest of it sounds like the control of a person's will, which really isn't altogether too difficult... but the mannerisms. Who would want to do something like that?

Correct, the Ministry of Magic. Nearly every country has its own division of the Ministry and it became more prominent after Wizards decided to go into hiding during the Witch trials. The Ministry does basically everything the non-Magical governments do themselves but ensure Muggles never find out about magic, as well.
