Reality bites

Leon Jackson, last year's winner of Simon Cowell's 'The X Factor', has been somewhat absent from our radio dials since he had his debut hit back in January on the back of his reality win. That is all about to change with the release of his new single, 'Don't Call This Love', on 13 October. It's not going to be to everyone's taste, but I reckon it has enough crossover appeal to become the breakout chart hit of the autumn. The key to Leon's reality winning counterpart's- Leona Lewis - success has been her ability not to alienate any sections of the music-buying public. Her massive hit, 'Bleeding Love', was, to be cynical, neither one thing nor the other, but it managed to push enough buttons to be a widespread hit. It wasn't exactly hindered by the fact that it was as catchy as knits in an infant school classroom.

I wasn't initially a supporter of Leon Jackson in 'The X Factor', but week-by-week, he managed to demonstrate a real depth and maturity to his voice. His style is a welcome departure from the falsetto-obsessed warblings of his male vocalist colleagues. One thing, though: will this year's reality winner have to be called Leo?
