I took the CLEP test for Intro to Psychology today and passed with a 71- a scaled grade, well over the 50 you need to pass, (You only need a 50 to pass!) and equivalent to an A. (Did I mention I finished it in 1/3 the alloted time?)
this has many implications.
First of all, it took me about a week of very casual studying to pull this off. I had forgotten I had this test until after work last night, and I was like, "Oh yeah, I'm not done studying! <3" This is both a point of pride for me and a point of shame for everybody else.
Seriously academia. If intro classes are really this pointless, why do you put them on major requirements? I think my study guide was out of date, because half the answers I knew just from being a nerd and reading up on pop-psychology from time to time. I did better on this test than on the prep tests, and most topics weren't even covered in the book. The test was designed for dumb people, by the way. There was a tutorial at the beginning of the test that explained how to use a mouse to click, recognize icons, and use the scroll bar. Should we really be giving college credit to people who don't know how to use a mouse? I suppose the software has remained the same since the early 90s, but that's hardly an excuse.
So what are intro classes for? This test gave me impression that the point of Freshmen level classes is to say (in baby-talk voice) "Uja booja! Who's a guy who got into college? Did you do better than 1000 on your SATs? You DID? Goooood booooooy."
Not to say I didn't learn anything from studying. I have several new big vocabulary words to describe simple concepts with. For example, due to lack of sleep last night I'm going to spend the next ten hours watching law and order and experiencing hypnogogic sensations. That means I'm going to feel like I'm falling asleep all day. Useful AND pretentious!
The result of passing this test is that I get to take real classes next semester. I'm currently waitlisted for Biological Basis of Bahaviour and (joy of joys) Statistics and Research Methods and Recitation. These two classes are prereqs for every other psych class. After next semester, the world will be my oyster.
Sadly, CHEM I was full. *fake tear*
I also feel I saved about $800 in tuition by taking this test. Can't I just test out of college? With self study, at this rate I could be done in about a year.
In the next week I will start studying Intro to Sociology- it's a core requirement and Hey, I Live In Society, so I can probably pass it. Right now. Sleep deprivation and all. CLEP ftw.
