Iraq War Pullout?...NO!

Aug 11, 2005 11:30

A Zogby poll that came out today has support for the war in Iraq at a low of 34%. The question this has raised is weather or not this means the US should start looking at pulling out. This is a very dangerous prospect for our future, and we must not pull out.

The president's message today sends a very confused message out to the US troops and to the insurgents.

``No decision has been made yet on increasing troops or decreasing troops,'' Bush said today in Crawford, Texas, after meeting with Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. The U.S. can't pull all its forces from Iraq, he said, because doing so would send a message to terrorists ``that the United States is weak."Bloomberg.com August 11, 2005

Let me first go on the record to say that I am totally against this war. I believe that lies from as far back as the early 90's lead us into this war and that today we are more unsafe because of it. I also believe the war has destroyed a lot of this country's power in the world. As a result of the war it is much more difficult for the US to influence other nations in representing our interests.

Stepping out today however would be a horrible blow to this country. It would make us more vulnerable, and hurt the political power of the country even more. This war is a mistake that we must see through until there is a permanent security apparatus in the area that can ensure peace and prosperity for the people living there.

We need to up our involvement in this country at this point. At no time during this war have we had enough forces engaged. We need greater international support. We will only get this through working with those other countries that have the military capacity to help. A true international effort to stabilize the region would be the only way to reduce deaths, and end the insurgency. Overwhelming force is the only way to end this issue.

At this point other countries have not been willing to offer support because we have pushed them away and really made it impossible for them to bring any reasonable case to their constituents that would provide support for securing the region. But this is possible if someone in the U.S. Government could find a way to reach out and re-frame the issue, asking for help.

The goal of security operations is to control territory, the current efforts are sporadic, and don't seem to reflect a solid coherent strategy. You can blame the President and civilian pentagon officials for that. The Military is itself in disagreement with the current strategy.

The U.S. could pull back to key areas and concentrate on establishing secure zones with overwhelming numbers of troops in small areas. Troops from other nations could then pull into those posts and replace US troops as they move on to control other regions. While this is happening a training and development program to create and train a stronger Iraqi security force could be ramped up. Other Nations would eventually leave the areas that have been secured and move to those newly secured areas. The new Iraqi security force would in smaller numbers, take over those areas which the International force is leaving.

I wasn't for this war, but we have been put into it by Neo-Conservative War Hawks in the Executive Branch. But what we have stirred up is a danger that without a great military force to counter act it will erupt into a haven for international terrorism greater than we have yet seen. For our protection, for the sake of the Iraqi's and for the sake of the entire globe, we cannot pull out until this is done and Iraq is secured and peaceful.
