Obama said that when he was in the Illinois state legislature, he had worked towards a racial profiling bill because there was indisputable evidence that African-Americans and Hispanics were being stopped disproportionately. "And that is a sign, an example of how race remains a factor in the society," he said.

Just as how race remains a factor in the fact that crimes (particularly those of a violent nature) are disproportionately committed by blacks and browns - hence the reason that the police force is itchy when dealing with blacks and browns involved in questionable situations (as the black professor and his black friend trying to push a front door down of a house in an upscale neighborhood - the case which sparked such remarks from Obama).
