Comment: I am working on His ch. 5, but in order for my journal to not be completely dead, I have decided to post a few oneshots I wrote a while ago. This one was written when it was rainy and I was in a bad mood. Sorry about that.

The air tastes of rain today. It does and Ruki doesn't know how he can taste the air but it does. It's that kind of lingering aftertaste when the rain's been pouring all night long, soaking the ground and it seems stupid to taste the air but Ruki can't help it. He likes it.

The rain reminds him of sorrows washed away, of problems forgotten and pain long gone. It's sad, but at the same time it's not, because it's a fresh start, a new beginning. And that's something Ruki likes. New beginnings. No more promises broken, no calls ignored, no cold shoulders. Just the fresh bedsheets, empty in the evening and barely worn in the morning.

It's time to get a new toothbrush, Ruki remembers. It's not so easy to tell when it's gotten too old, when it's standing in its cup like that, all alone with no mate next to it it could be compared to. It's time to get a new toothbrush, but Ruki likes the one he uses, even though it's several months old already, because the toothbrush isn't entirely Ruki's and it doesn't taste like him either. It tastes like... rain.

It tastes like the rain that fell on that dark evening when Ruki spent a night alone for the first time in ages. Like the dewdrops in the grass when Ruki took Koron for a walk alone that morning. Like the dampness of the air that autumn day when Ruki ate dinner by himself, everything new and strange to him, like he was a newborn puppy learning the smells and tastes of the world.

Koron barks happily, pulling on the leash when he sees a bird and Ruki laughs as he holds him back. Koron always used to bark at birds, until two gorgeous cockatiels moved in with him and he was forced to get to know them. For a long while he loved birds, until the rain fell and the birds moved, and ever since then Koron barks when he sees a bird.

The walk is almost over, but Ruki's hesitant to go home, wanting to sit down in a café and have a cup of coffee, warming his hands on it. It's a habit he's acquired recently, because he didn't need the warmth of coffee before. When his fingers got cold he'd complain loudly, and before he could think his hands were wrapped in another man's, rough palms stroking his skin and warming it tenderly.

And he'd be lying if he said he didn't miss it, because he did, but missing something hurt and he had once promised someone to never hurt himself if he could avoid it, and so Ruki refused to feel the pain that threatened to overflow whenever he took walks like this and his thoughts flew.

Of course he missed it. He missed standing on his tiptoes, pushing bleached strands of hair out of the way to kiss soft lips, slinging his arms around broad shoulders and happily melting away. Of course he missed that deep voice, the throaty chuckle and the strong arms that wrapped him in velvety heat. Of course he missed the dark eyes that would glint at him in the light, softening before him.

And Ruki wondered, suddenly, when everything had changed so much. Was it that night when the rain fell heavily, merging with Ruki's tears and washing away all the filth of the world but apparently not Ruki's heart? Or was it the week before, when he yelled so much his throat was sore and he couldn't seem to quell the anger inside? Or was it the day before that, when soft lips had brushed against a different ear, not his, not Ruki's, and whispered those words laced with heavy meaning that was lost completely as soon as the syllables were uttered?

“You're the only one for me.”

A/N: I wrote it as Reituki, but of course you can imagine it to be anyone else who owns two cockatiels and is in the same band. Yup. And I can't promise I will stop with the angst. Maybe some day. Sorry. Have some cookies. -hands out free cookies-
