The following is an e-mail I'm about to send out to a bunch of people. If you didn't get it, either I don't have your e-mail address, or I probably don't like you anymore.
Liebe Freunde und Freundinnen,
I have now been in Paderborn, Germany for over three weeks. I really like it here - it’s a fairly small city, but big enough to have everything I need. It’s very modern, but has plenty of nature around - trees are everywhere throughout the city and on campus, and there’s a big, beautiful park at the start of the Pader river. Virtually everyone I’ve met here has been great - fun, friendly people.
I live in the student dorms just across the street from campus. I have my own room, but I share a kitchen, two bathrooms, and a living room with two other students. It’s much more like sharing a house with a few guys than being in that box Western gave me.
The school year is just ending for the Germans. I’m here early for an intensive language course. It’s going pretty well, and I’m making friends from all over the world.
I haven’t left Paderborn yet - my first two weeks were filled with formalities (these people love paperwork - for serious) and I’ve spent all my free time this week at Libori Fest, Paderborn’s big annual festival. Soon I’ll start taking day trips to nearby cities.
I have a photo account at flickr.com and a livejournal, which I promised myself I’d update at least once a week. Right now there’s just a copy of this e-mail and some stuff about my roommates, but soon, I’ll write about Libori, my new friends, class, what it’s like to be an American around here, and various random nonsense. If you’re nice to me, I might even write it in English.

[edited out -- ask me for it]
That’s all for now. Write back with what you’ve been up to, how you’re doing, and what’s been happening on the home continent. You’re all in my thoughts.
Totally not gettin’ old,
Dan
