just another la day (or night)

so i'll start with last night, the most fun and interesting part of yesterday. the thing that got me almost no sleep last night.
so picture this: your friend says "hey come out monday night and see my boyfriend's band play. they are doing a cd release thing too". and you say sure. 'cause really you like to hear new stuff. and going out with friends is fun too. and the knitting factory is supposed to be a pretty cool place to hear music. so those are the basics, what everyone might think right away. and then you start to add in the fact that you know that the boyfriend has played in other bands. like bands that have put out cd's and gone on us tours and stuff like that. you forget if he was mostly just studio or live. but he is the brother of the lead singer i think it is from lifehouse. so he played with them for the first record. and then he was with the calling. but he pretty much kinda denys all that. not that it is easy to say things like "yeah that stuff sucks" when you put your time and effort into it. but it isn't him, something i got from meeting him the first time a couple months ago. it works for some people, but not him. he isn't so mainstream. right. so you've just thought about the fact that hey, there could be some cool connections here, a definate reason to go. but then you keep thinking what you have heard about this band. 'cause the connections don't stop with the boyfriend. see, the band is called jimmy chamberlin complex. that would be jimmy chamberlin who was drummer for the smashing pumpkins and zwan in previous band lives. so that's totally cool. and you heard a while ago that billy corgan sang on the record. so there would be no reason for him not to be there...
except he wasn't. but whatever. it was still fun. the opening band, love lies, was alright. sort of you typical emo-y type but also angsty band or whatever. they had some technical difficulties. and their lead guitarist was kinda lame. but it worked. so the show started at 8 with the opener. and i figured they wouldn't play too long, so we got there around 8. or at least planned to. we were a few minutes early 'cause i actually wasn't running late and there was no traffic. go monday nights. and then the openers didn't come on until almost 8:30 anyway. darn, more time to drink beer... adam and i got a table 'cause we were kind of lazy. we intended to go downstairs to the main floor for jimmy chamberlin complex, but then we never made it. but it was a great view. and it is so fun to watch what people do while playing instruments. so the band focuses on the insturmental. there are some vocals, at least by the four main band members, but again, they aren't the focus of hte songs. and each member brings in their own style and it is this nice mix. nothing that is easily describable. the record just came out today, so i don't know how easy it is to find stuff off of it yet, but you should if you get a chance.
so yeah. the show ended about 10:30, and we hung around to chat, and then we debated going home, and then decided what the hell, and helped hte boyfriend pack up and then we all went over to the afterparty. which was at this place called the beauty bar on cahuenga. apparently earlier in the evenings you can get a manicure or pedicure or a henna tatoo for like $5. it was empty when we first got there, but then people came in from the other show, and then they all left just after midnight. so all in all we weren't out that late. or well, at least we didnt' leave hollywood that late. we still had to get back to the west side.

and that was the fun part of the day. but i got home to go to bed and realized that i really was pretty darn tired. and i had to teach at 9 which meant leaving just after 8... but so going back to yesterday again... to the bad part... so i had a discussion section yesterday morning as well as the two today. yesterdays was the one already screwed by mlk day. but so i get to the classroom (having looked up the room number before leaving my desk and promptly forgetting it when i got to the right hallway and not remembering about where the classroom was since i'd only been in it once for 15 minutes...) and there were already students collecting in the hall. and i'm now guessing which number sounds right, but it doesn't really matter anyway, as the door is locked. and so i go to the person who takes care of rooms for the chem dept. only she isn't there. so the other people in the office send me to the guy who takes care of keys for the chem department among other things. and the thing is that the classroom is in the geology building, which is technically connected to the chem building, but yeah, he can't do anything about it. so he sends me to his equivalent of the geo department. but there was no one there. so i go back upstairs to the room. and now everyone is there. we decide to knock on the door of a professor across the hall. but she doesn't have keys 'cause this isn't one that the geo department actually controls, it is controlled by the university. so i have a quick chat in the hall with my section, saying we can do an office hour like thing outside, or they can wait a couple minutes while i try to hunt down more helpful people. they decide to wait. so off i go again. this time there were people in the office, although not people who actually knew what they were talking about. so they look up the room to figure out what is going on. and this guy is like, yeah, that's a university room, so we dont' have it on the master key. did you try the handle? aren't there usually two doors? i was like, yeah i tried the handle. so he decides to walk over to the classroom with me. we get to the door and he waves his fingers over it then tries the handle. locked. i guess these doors are supposed to automatically open at 7am or something. they are on these code locks, and the people in the departments dont' know how to open them. so after all that, we headed outside, i answered a few questions, but for the most part they needed me to sorta lecture about quantum 'cause they didn't even know what to ask. but i couldn't do it in a meaningful way without a board. so i didn't end up having the discussion. now i have to set up a makeup but the person who takes care of that just had a death in the family so i don't know what is going on. anyway. i'm now up an hour later than i meant to be. so good night all.
