The last 2 nights have been fantastic. My first weekend away from Gastonia and Kristin (whom I miss very very very much) were alleviated by a visitfromafriend, an incredible concert, and an almost implausible set of coincidences that made the football game last night unbelievably memorable.
Friday Night. Charlie Faires payed me a visit. After overcoming many trials and tribulations (read: "being given horrible directions") he finally made his way onto campus and we headed to see Michael Flynn and Jump Little Children at Ziggy's. This is JUMP's last tour, and incidentally enough, they got their start in Winston Salem; so, as you can guess, the place was absolutely packed. Jim Boggia opened, and I was pleasantly suprised by his live show (his CD never really impressed me). Michael Flynn followed and was great. he played "Redneck Bar" and "You're In Luck" which definitely made my night.
Then. Get this. I'm sitting/standing, and waiting for JUMP to come on and *BAM* out of nowhere I see Mrs. Parker sitting behind me. Mrs. Parker. From Highland School of Technology. The guidance counseler. at a JUMP concert almost 2 hours away from Gastonia!!!?? At first I was in disbelief, but then she came and talked to me and asked me how college was. All i could think was "What.the.fuck. this is soo weird; I went to college to get away from High School and here she is.. stalking me!". So yeah.. anybody that sees her on Monday should ask her how the "Jump Little Children" concert was. earn some brownie points.
Finally Jump Little Children came on and played with an energy that really can't be described. Altogether, it was a very very very good show.
So yeah. Saturday rolls along. and Wake Forest Football is slated to take on the East Carolina pirates. I'm excited, of course, and am one of the first 20 students to get in line for the game. We run to the stands the minute the gates are opened and secure second row seats in the student section. Next thing we know... an athletic assistant asks us if we would like to ring the bell. At Wake there is a tradition of ringing the bell as the players come out at the beginning of the game, and for every win. Its a huge black bell that sits right near the Wake lockerroom. We all heartily agreed and were ushered down to the field to watch the game right near the action. Also, we were delegated the responsibility of pulling the net up for kicks. It was soo fucking cool. thats all i can think of to describe it. we were literally 10-20 feet away from the players when they were on our half of the field.. and we could hear their plays as they audibled. we also got the chance to go crazy and pump the crowd up, and I took full advantage. The only disadvantage was that we could yell obscenities at the refs because they could actually hear us. I broke this rule once, and the referee turned around and stared right at me.. i was so scared he was going to toss me.. but he didn't. Wake Forest won the game 44-34.. and as the players ran back into the locker room they thanked us for being such good fans (well.. Gattis and Abbate did). It was unreal. i still have my sideline access pass.. and i'm sure i'll treasure it for a lifetime. ;-)
Today. our #1 Field Hockey beat #6 Michigan State.. even without 3 of our best players (playing internationally).
and now. I'm typing this. but i've got to get going. I have a midterm tommorow and haven't studied at all, unfortunately.
peace peace peace out.
nothing tops a weekend in Gastonia with you; don't forget that
