So, this weekend was decent. Good actually, and that says a lot considering the stupid Red Wings only played 1 period of hockey Friday night.
Phase 1: The Detroit Red Wings
We sat in the hotel room watching the "game..." I use game in quotations, because Detroit really only played 1 period of hockey. Of course, they still might have won if Brad Stuart hadn't decided to assist BOTH of Maxime Talbot's goals... TRADE HIM! (yes, I have not mercy). So, the fact that the Wings lost, coupled with the fact that they lost IN DETROIT and I live/work in Pittsburgh is going to make this week (and probably at least one more week) HELL. My boss even went to far as to text me immediately after the game (and she's on vacation too) to taunt me. Our IT guy has been sending me emails all day about the Pens and the parade (which is today), even though he is also on vacation... WTF? I didn't even talk that much trash! Sure, I hung up a poster of Marion Hossa in my cubicle during the finals, but come on! From vacation? Goodness...
Phase 2: Jackie Kallal Triathlon
I was nervous as all hell... I had trained some, but I didn't think it was enough (I was right). I was especially worried about the swim portion... Luckily for me, I signed up in the fatty-guy category (known as Clydesdales for this Tri...lol) So, I didn't have to start in the first wave of swimming with most of the other 39 and under males. THANK GOD. The water was cold and made you panic at first...even though I had been warned by a few seasoned triathletes, it was hard not to feel overwhelmed. Then, some knob-job kicked me in the ribs...which took place while my head was under the water. Enter water in the lungs, begin sputtering, cue the lifeguards. Some wannabe surfer tried to come cruising over to me on his body board to ask if I wanted to quit. For a serious second, every ounce of my being wanted to just get the hell outta the water. I was less than 1/4 of the way done, and I was coughing up water. There was also a TON of nasty-ass seaweed to navigate through. But, I sucked it up, told surfer-boy I was good, coughed like hell until the water was done choking me, and got my swimming rhythm on. Sure, I was WAY in the back compared to most people, but I just wanted to finish. By the time the swim was over, I was wondering if I was still sane or not... damn was that hard! It was ok though, because I'm a strong biker... and the bike was next! I could just coast on through, pass a bunch of people and catch up to the wife (who had a VERY strong swim), right?
WRONG. In case you didn't know, Pennsylvania is full of fucking hills. FULL. The wife and I don't have racing bikes either, only mountain bikes... I was getting passed by most of the people who were still behind me, as the tires on a mountain bike are just too fat to make climbing hills possible. Add into the fact that the first 3 miles were almost entirely uphill, and I was about ready to quit, cry, and/or kill myself. Luckily, right after mile marker three there was a race worker at an intersection guiding people along. The words "your hill climbing is just about over" have never sounded so good... The last 6 miles or so were much more downhill than uphill, so I was working hella-hard to gain ground. I had seen the wife near the turn-around, and she was about 1.5 miles ahead... Damn! She kicked ass on the swim!!! Finished the bike as strong as I could (which wasn't all that great), and started getting my run on...
By "my run," I mean more like my zombie shamble... That was the longest 5k of my life. I finally caught wifey at the half-way point of the run...and we finished together! All in all, it was WAY harder than I thought. Don't EVER let anyone tell you that a "sprint" triathlon is easy... fuck that! However, in the end, I had a TON of fun and definitely want to do it again. This time I plan to train much harder though...and I know more about what to expect!
Oh, yeah, my tri number was #42...which is AWESOME. I couldn't believe that happened. LOL.
Phase 3: Post-Tri Awesome
We snagged some buffet-style Whole Foods meals on our way home, had a bit of Rum and Coke, some homemade Tiramisu, and then caught a SOLID nap. It was great! We watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall when we got up (and had some dinner + chocolate fondue). Seriously, why is Judd Apatow OBSESSED with wang? There was about no boob, but Jason Segel was donging it out all damn movie! It ended up being a pretty decent movie though (in spite of it being Cockfest 09). After movie, it was definitely bed time!
Slept in (until around 8am...lol). Naturally woke up, and wasn't anywhere near as tired as I thought I would be! Got up, got some bagels from Einstein Bros. Went grocery shopping. Good times all in all in the AM... then took it easy and had a nice hike out at Frick Park. Cleaned up the apartment like a grand champion, and tipped back a bottle of fine White Zinfandel!
Phase 4: The upcoming week
Last week the boss will be on vacation, so I'll be busting up some serious Mafia Wars while at work! I am also beta testing the new expansion for Warstorm. Good times. If you aren't playing it, check it out at www.warstorm.com -look me up, I'm Availin. You can get by as a free player (especially now), and the community is pretty nice (mostly).
I'm also seriously thinking about busting out some major Halo 3 this week... any takers?
~~~ I'm going to call in sick to work Thurs...ha ha! - It was going to be Tuesday, but Xbox Live is having a potential 24 hour downtime on Tues, so NO f'king DEAL there!!!
That's all...if you stuck with me until now, thanks! If you didn't...well, yeah. Sorry, this particular blog is long and boring, but hell, it's over now!
