So out of pity of her mother's pathetic cautioning and forbidding us to drive over the Altamont through a "torrential storm" I awaken from my bed at about 9am to a rainy stormy morning. I begin my day by driving to the drive-thru at Starbucks, kindly tipping the lady $2 for her promptness of making the two coffees; one for me and one for my best friend.
I arrive at her house and since it is a Monday morning that we didn’t have school, my best friend, Lori is sleeping upstairs in her room. I walk in, and lightly brush her face with the side of the icy cup of caramel frappucino and she happily wakes up to see me sitting over her bed. We talk for a few minutes then I show her how to download music because she is begging me, when all of a sudden we hear a huge crash outside. A tree from her yard has fallen on a neighbor's fence because the wind caught hold of it.
She madly throws on her goulashes which are green with pink flowers on them and she checks out the situation. After calling her father, we decide we should go to lunch; we embark in her car and arrive ten minutes later at this great vintage deli.
At the deli we see two EMTs and one initiates a conversation by looking at Lori's goulashes and complimenting her goulashes. She thanks them and we have a light conversation that goes somewhat like this:
EMT: Dude I love your awesome footwear
Lori: Thanks, imp wearing toe socks too
EMT: Whatever floats your boat, hey are you guys in high school?
Lori: Yea
EMT: Well why aren’t you ...attending high school today?
Me: Oh, you know its one of those in-service days.
EMT: Huh?
Lori: It’s a perk of Catholic school; we get in-service days off, like today
EMT: Wow, Catholic school, that’s tough...
Me: Yeah... it's tough having the day off and going out to lunch.
EMT: Doesn’t sound too good to me.
Lori: Nah, we get forgiven for our sins, it’s a pretty good set up.
EMT: That rocks, I was raised in a house where my mom was a Catholic and my dad was a Mormon
Me: Ouch, five hour services... how did you survive?
Lori: Ha, talk about tough
EMT: Yeah, I chose Catholic, its way better, one hour of mass.
ME: No doubt.
Waitress: This way please.
EMT: Hey don’t call 911 today... its way too cold.
Me: Have a good one.
Lori: Ok don't worry, we’re not planning on a heart attack today.
We then order our food and about ten minutes later the waitress comes back and says "you can't say no but someone already paid your tab and they bring the message, Catholics need to stick together."
