Waku is a character from Bokurano, a story that consists of an anime/manga/novel and follows two basic premises: (1) There are infinite versions of the universe you live in, and you are living infinite lives. (2) The main cast of characters, fifteen kids from the same middle school, are tricked into piloting a giant robot that will save their version of the universe from being swallowed up by the other various versions of the universe, but when their contract runs out, they will die.
Waku's backstory is as follows:
He was the star forward on his middle school's soccer team. Notorious for his ninety-yard kick, it wasn't long before he was scouted by Japan's national soccer league. He had a wonderful life, it seemed: a mother, a father, a brother, a sister, and a pretty and intelligent best friend. But there were always holes in his life. His military father was verbally and physically abusive, his bipolar mother abandoned the family when Takashi was nine, his baseball player of a sister suffered from failing eyesight, his culinary expert of a brother was involved in drugs and sex rings, and his best friend--an African girl--was treated horribly by his racist father and a society too homogenized for its own good.
And then, of course, the icing on the cake. A thirteen-year-old Waku witnessed the rape of a young girl one day while walking home from soccer practice. Terrified, he ran away rather than help the girl. Later, coming to his senses, he scoured the entire city for the gil, but was unable to find her. Overwhelmed with guilt, embued with a sense of failure and a lack of self-worth, he quit everything he loved--most notably soccer. Unable to concentrate on anything, he failed all his classes in school and was forced to repeat the seventh grade.
As penance for the girl he never saved, he sabotaged himself in every way possible and still lives with a crippling self-hatred and fear of failure.
