This event that happened today compleetly caught me off guard. I have had one or two friends comment me on my skin. I however, never had a total stranger say something to me. That all changed today. I was in a local department store getting vegetarian cookbook and some stuff for my face.
When I went to my usual Clinique counter there was a woman there. I went up to the counter to look at the new products and get more of my regulars when this woman said to me "You have the best skin I have ever seen!." then she proceeds to ask me everything I use on my skin, how I eat, and what tricks I have. So I explained what I do and how I go about and she said I should really consider sharing it with more people. So I'll share here. I know it might sounds vein and self centered but I don't really work for my skin the way some people do. I also follow really simple cliche skin routines. So here is my routine, followed by some tips and advice.
Routine:
I wash my face with Purity cleanser by Philosophy. I used to use good old facial soap by Clinique until a good friend of mine (also a dermatologist) told me that I need a cleanser that replaces the Ph balance lost in cleansing. So she told me to try the Purity cleanser by Philosophy. I have been using it for maybe three weeks max, and I have yet to find something wrong with my skin since. Not a single zit, blackhead, discoloration, or dry spot. So I always wash my face twice a day.
I rarely use a toner, maybe once a week on a Sunday night.
If by chance I have a blemish I use a salyic acid acne gel by Clinique.
Then I moisturize with Murad Perfection Daily moisturizer SPF 30. I used to go tanning a lot, and it ruined my skin for the longest time. So now, I won't even risk it. I wear SPF even on cloudy days, because the sun still gets to your skin, and thats bad!
Tips:
I exfoliate every other day. I use St. Ives Apricot Scrub. Why? Well, it's dirt cheap, and I use so much scrub every week that the exspensive stuff just isn't worth it. Hell, I used to exfoliate with corn meal and plain yogurt. Don't laugh, it works. I still to this day use it once a week. The yogurt is loaded with enzyms that are awesome for your skin.
I try to put something moisturizing and natural on my face once a week, like a mask. I often use mashed banana and whole milk, half an avacado (really amazing for your skin, and highly moisturizing), and I sometimes just rub a little olive oil on the top of my skin and then put a steamed towel on my face.
I don't eat junk. I rarely eat processed food, wich has not only allowed me to loose weight, but has helped my skin. I also don't eat meat as I am a vegetarian. I imagine my natural glow has a lot to do with what I consume. So I will be honest. My diet is LOADED with veggies and fruit. Lot's of tofu and soy. Weather it be a baby spinach, avacado, tomatoe, sunflower seeds, alfalfa sprouts, lime juice, EVOO, salt 'n peppa, or a gardenburger with fruit salad. I ALWAYS eat healthy. It's just not good to load up on junk food, sugar, and baked goods. They taste good, sure, and they satisfy your sweet tooth, but so does a piece of starfruit or a kiwi.
DRINK A SHITLOAD OF WATER!!! I drink a gallon a day. Water is always with me and I have countless bottles of it stashed everywhere. My desk, the bathroom (yes the bathroom, I keep one on the counter, don't ask me why), and always some in the car or my backpack.
Work out. Sweating clears toxins from your skin, and it also stimulates your metabolisim (spelling?).
Don't smoke! I had horrible skin when I smoked. I quit, and now it glows. Before it was very pale, blotchy, and had blemishes on it. I also had circle under my eyes. Wich reminds me. I use Clinique under eye cream. Any underye cream is good. It's an area of skin that rarely gets moisture so I always use a cream!
So that's my little essay on skincare. LOL. Hope I didn't compleetly bore you like no other, and hey, maybe you even learned something! ;-)
Toodles,
Kyle
P.S. Linda McCartney cookbooks rock my world!
