Books I Have Read in the Last Week:
Amartya Sen. Identity and Violence: The Illusion of Destiny.
Charles Taylor. Modern Social Imaginaries. Totally fascinating, readable and thought provoking.
Mary Wollstonecraft. Mary and The Wrongs of Woman, or Maria. Yay!
Elizabeth Inchbald. A Simple Story. Hilariously, also yay, which I did not expect. The story of a young woman who falls in love with her guardian, who happens to be a Catholic priest. Usually that would freak me out, but it was surprisingly engaging.
Add to that essays by David Hume, Barbon, North and Adam Smith, then Heidigger's Speech on the University's. My brain, it is le tired.
Plus I somehow stumbled into a paying job, which I'd thought was a volunteer position. So, yay money.
I also read the Greg Rucka/Steve Lieber comic Whiteout Vol. One, about a disgraced federal marshall stationed at McMurdo. Everytime she talked about finding a pilot, I thought John Shepherd was going to make a cameo. V. distracting. Pretty good book though, with two female protagonists who have a lot of potential. I'm looking out for the sequels next time I'm at the library.
Cleaning my room today, boo-urns. Came across some notes from my science class for ignorant humanities students from last term, and found a poem.
The unity of this melody is picked apart like petals wilting under the pianist's hand. My offering is the sound of a dying flower.
Where ferns unfold
under unstrung bows
under curving brickwork skies,
notes, like phonebooks,
leave no bruises.
Collisions hurt us all the same and defeat leaves us scattered
and ominous
and longing for a gardener's firm hand.
I caught the premiere of the new BSG. Apparently I am now a Kara/Leoben 'shipper? Or, at least, I really like them acting together, they're very interesting. I like when they interact. And seeing Leoben back away like that was hilarious and awesome.
It helps that I'm not at all invested in this show, so I can sort of dip in and out. Tahmoh and Grace were awesome for their tiny bit of screen time. Lee irritates me so much, and his hair is insane. What's going on there?
