Men With Mullets

The only reason I watch hockey is to see the big group hug at the end of the game. For some reason, it makes me unaccountably happy to see great burly athletes plowing into the centre of the ice, hugging helmets and slapping each others backs. It's just so cute.

And now the Canadian team has won the World Cup. I'm so proud of them. They're all really young and they did really well against the Fins. Doan's goal was perfect. And the Fins were really impressive, especially Ruutu (superfast!) and the goalie Kiprusoff. They looked so sad when they lost. It makes me want to send them letters full of hugs.

I think this is why I don't watch sports generally. I get so torn between the two teams, and end up hoping for a tie.

But watching with my parents is so funny. My mum goes all parental and ends up giving safety tips to the television. "Keep your sticks down boys!" Whenever someone gets checked she makes this funny 'Agwhssshhr' noise, which is the best approximation I can type.

Poor Wayne Gretzky looked so serious though. He only ever smiles when they win, and stupid CBC cut away before we could see if he looked happy. It's like he saves up his smiles for victories, but he's won so many times his smiles are in limited supply and he's forced to ration.

In other news (HA!) Elaine Duncan, of Glasgow Caledonian University, and David Sheffield, of Staffordshire University, say that keeping a diary can be detrimental to your mental health. (Uh oh, goes my mental health.)
"The results showed that those who kept a diary recorded greater levels of anxiety and somatic symptoms such as headaches, feeling run down and aches and pains. On top of this, those who reread their entries reported even higher levels of anxiety and distress."
