Am I the only one who, when viewing fic-community entries on my flist, sees that someone has coded non-default fonts and colours into their post and immediately skips over it, because this is someone who thinks they are a speshul snowflake?

I used to check out every entry in fic communities. Weird font? OK! Multiple colours? OK! BLINK TAGS? Sure, why not?

And then I would be confronted with some of the most awful crap ever flung by a chimp, and I would kill that tab like stomping a spider.

Is this some kind of unwritten rule of new writers, dressing up their entries to be UniQue and prettified so you won't notice they haven't put much effort into refining the actual writing?

If any of you who do this should see this mini-rant, please listen to me: work on your writing, not your HTML. Become a better writer, and you'll get those positive comments you crave. Forget about fancying up your community entries, because the only people who are taking you seriously are other people who think that the look of your post is more important than its content, and those Big Name Fans (OK, not me) you want to check out your stuff? Are backing away in dismay and making a mental note of your LJ name so they don't make the same mistake again.

We all want fresh, new, awesome writing from new people, it's what keeps fandom alive and kicking. Just... please, focus on content. Pay attention to the details of your story and spelling and grammar and such stuff, and forget about the text colours and whimsical fonts, OK? Please?
