"Irreversibly Fucked"

I remember sitting in one of the brand new classrooms of the brand new science wing at Hampshire Regional. I was in the eighth grade and in Earth Science. The thing about studying the Earth is that there are millions of rad, interesting things you come upon. Unfortunately, for every awesome thing you discover, there are ten horrifying realities that accompany it.

I remember talking about the weather. I remember discussing global warming and how it will lead to the next ice age. We were faced with terrifying bits of reality about what the world will become. We were assured, though...ASSURED that none of this would be our reality. It wouldn't happen until thousands of years after we were long gone.

The Truth.

Multiple deaths.  Widespread power outages.  Panic.  Society coming to a screeching halt, at least for them.

Same storm is heading towards us.  If damage is like that done by it previously, it is estimated our region may be without power for a week to ten days.  No heat.  No water.  No gas pumps.  No traffic lights.  No movies.  No video games.

Was technology worth this?  Does anybody else wonder why it wasn't until we were irreversibly fucked that we started making more environmentally friendly vehicles?  What about how long it took us to switch from CFCs to safer alternatives for out trendy dos?

I'm not a hippy.  I'm not a tree-hugger.  I'm not an environmentalist.  I don't usually bitch about this kind of stuff.  But Christ...I LIVE HERE.  The winters are colder than ever.  The summers are deathly hot.  Spring and fall are almost non-existant.

I'm terrified of what's going to happen next.  I know that's stupid.  I know it's lame.  But I am terrified.
