Before her the sky was a deep purple that was slowly darkening to a black as she brought her gaze up and away from the world below her. She had been up on these roofs with Jack; so many times, and they had talked out her worries as he looked down upon the world like some kind of guardian angel. Now here she was looking out into the vast world around her. She was alone.
The sky darkened, and hundreds of stars began to fill the night's sky, a beautiful reflection of the bright world below and a soft breeze caressed her hair. She wondered if the world above was as chaotic as the world below, a world filled with hurt and danger, and yet filled with so many wonders too.
Down below her the world sped past, parents rushing to get their children to bed so they could steal a few precious moments together, lovers curling up in one another’s arms, friends socialising and having fun. Those things seemed so far out of reach now and they had been things she had wanted in her life, until Torchwood. Now things were different.
Jack.
Captain Harkness, her good friend and yet someone she knew very little about, he was her rock and she was the emotional element he felt he lost. Jack was gone, left without a word, all of them unsure of what to do or how to feel.
Owen.
The cocky doctor himself, and the person who had really changed her view on her life and what she'd wanted from it. She thought's she'd been happy with how her life was going and she'd had it all planned out before her. Not any more. Each day was a new adventure to her.
Rhys.
He spent most of his time out with the boys or drunk and sleeping on the sofa. They hardly ever talked or did anything, the last time they had tried one of Rhys' female work mates had been there and it was almost like Gwen hadn't existed and it was the first time she'd noticed how unshaven Rhys was, how chubby his face had become and how much of a beer belly he was getting.
Down there below her the world was filled with complications and she understood why Jack spent so much time here. It was away from the pressures below, and the expectations of family and society. Time to think, to be alone. That’s what she thought.
Owen stood behind her.
Ever since Jack had gone he'd been watching her closely, deciding it was his place to step into Jack's shoes and keep them safe, more so with Gwen. There was more between them and he knew her well.
"Oi, you’ll catch your death up here. Twenty bloody stories up in the middle of the night and you're not wearing a coat," he wrapped his arms around her, "What am I gonna do with you?"
She just grinned, leaning back into his arms. Safe here, the best feeling in the world. Feeling so safe in someone's arms. The best feeling in the world and he expected nothing in return, after all, the best things in life are free, and she saw the world for all it’s beauty and peace from up here.
