Last month I discovered what I have to say is one of the best superhero comics I have ever read. I came across it quite by accident while doing research for my original superhero story Strike Four. The cover art of the first issue didn't really appeal to me, honestly, and the name of the book sounded a bit hokey, so I wasn't really interested in reading it. The protagonist of my story is a lightning based elemental hero, so I was only looking to make sure that the concepts in the comic were not too close to mine. (Thankfully, they are not.)
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the artwork; the intelligence and wit of the characterization and dialogue; and a straightforward story that was presented with enough emotion and grit to make it feel realistic without a descent into the heavy-handed, darkly ominous quality that seems to be prevalent in comics today. I'm a fan of Batman, so obviously I like my share of dark and mysterious, but sometimes it does get to be a bit much. This is the kind of story that made me love superheroes as a kid. The best part is that the issues are available free, online at
Comicsonscreen.com-Captain Thunder Captain Thunder and Blue Bolt is published by Heroic Publishing, so comic fans may not be familiar with the book. (I wasn't.) It's the story of Mike and Paul Fremont, a father and son who are reunited after a 12 year separation. I'm a sucker for parent/child dynamics (as well as sibling dynamics) as anyone who reads my fiction might have guessed, so I suppose it was rather obvious that the book would suck me in. I'm slow sometimes.
