Dae-sungie to all~
It’s the small things in life, thinks Dae-sung. The big picture isn’t really relevant, because he can’t do much about it, but the small things, that’s where he can help. Perhaps he can’t do Everything, but Little can get you far. He can’t stop world hunger or give peace to all that need it - still, he can be generous with what he has.
Generosity is an important thing. To give of what one has to enrich the lives of others’, whether the gift is material or something even more precious, perhaps a kiss, is what separates Good from Bad, Kind from Unkind, and Dae-sung thinks that he’s getting the hang of it now. He’s young, but he’s smart, and a little giving can change so much.
Many of us are generous for very selfish reasons. We give to feel better about ourselves - “I gave, I helped, it makes me a better person”, but does it? Have we not ignored the point, the very reason for giving?
True generosity is to give without expecting any sort of credit. It doesn’t need to be very expensive, or even special, it just needs to be something good. It doesn’t hurt if it’s tasty, Dae-sung smiles to himself as he strolls around the candy store, touching boxes of chocolate and colourful sweets. Today is no one’s birthday and there’s nothing to celebrate - Dae-sung thinks that it’s a perfect day for a little deed of generosity.
He buys five multicoloured lollipops. Yellow, pink, purple and red and green - a Happy Rainbow of colours and they’re so pretty and so bright! He wraps them up in cellophane, he likes the sound of it, it’s crisp. He has decided to put one lollipop on each bed in the house, his own included. He doesn’t need anyone to know from where the presents came. Because only way to be truly generous in the most selfless form is to give namelessly and without expecting any form of praise.
To be kind is to ignore one’s own needs in favour of others’ and Dae-sung is a good person like that. He thinks that everyone loves lollipops. Ji-yong will squeal with joy at this unexpected gift, Dae-sung knows. Seung-ri will hug everyone in sight just in case and Young-bae will smile to himself as Seung-hyun tries to figure out who’s been playing Secret Santa. Dae-sung will squeal with Ji-yong, for good measure.
