One does not like to assume, however added to the context it was used in I do not relish having spoken it. A variation of blackguard would certainly be a preferable one.

Someone who feels that his words are a compromise to his person. Former slander has mostly been a product of that malicious air that seems to permeate the language of so many aboard this vessel.
