i had the most wonderful night on saturday. it was the perfect antidote to my current state of mind. when i actually sit back and look at all the stuff i've been up to lately it occurs to me that i'm definitely doing so much to keep my mind off other things. oh well, at least it keeps things interesting!
so...saturday. i met a big bunch of girlie mates for dinner at a little local indian jazz restaurant and gossipped about boys, shoes, pulling techniques and sex over some poppadums and keema naan before scampering off to waterlow park in highgate for
an open air screening of dirty dancing!! this event was the ultimate in girlie therapy put on by shloer ('the grown-up soft drink'). i was looking forward to it and all but never imagined quite how spectacular it would be. the park was bathed pink and green light for the occasion and there were twinkly rope lights leading the way to the screening from the entrance. on arrival there were free cocktails, free gu chocolate brownies, free popcorn and a veritable river of free shloer!! not to mention people to do your nails and mini make-overs. does it get better than that? i mean does it? and the whole shebang was completely free!
we got the best seats in the house right up front. it was really quite special. obviously the audience was 95% female but there were a few token boyfriends who had been dragged along for the ride. as such, being the more organised sex, we came prepared with cushions and blankets galore to insure high standards of comfort!! the atmosphere was incredible because every single person there was a die hard fan of the film. we sang along to every single song and also important bits of dialogue -- 'nobody puts baby in a corner'!! after too many free cocktails, popcorn and waaay too many brownies we went to a nearby pub for yet more girlie gossip. glorious.
it sure has been a time for enjoying movies outdoors. recently i went to
film four's summer screen at
somerset house. first time around was to see
north by northwest for a friend's birthday. i do like swooning over old school movie stars like cary grant. they sure don't make 'em like they used to! anthony minghella of cold mountain and english patient fame came along and gave a cracking little speech about how great occasions like this are as a cinema-going event and how it is something that is dying out these days. good stuff! on the second visit i saw
howl's moving castle while snuggling under a blanket with the very lovely boy i'm dating at the moment. it is a spectacular setting for a movie-going experience. or any experience really. i guess the pink sunset helped. i also went to see sigur ros there last summer. that was pretty damn awesome too.
last week thursday i took b to see
fool for love at the apollo theatre. his favourite film is natural born killers so i thought he'd appreciate a play that features juliette lewis in nothing but a bra and panties. turns out i was right. it's also not a bad play at all.
bodies exhibition at earls court on saturday. if you haven't been, you should make it a priority. it's really worth seeing. the foetal development gallery is a bit tough to take, (especially speaking as someone who has had an abortion), but incredible. real preserved examples right through from the embryonic stages to a few weeks old. they've also developed a technique to showcase and preserve organs and blood vessels with nothing else attached so they are seemingly suspended in space, appearing to be just floating there. there are sliced up cross sections, dissections, insides of intestines. it's staggering really -- educational eye candy. and it really got me thinking. all of these things are inside all of us but it's hard to get a real grasp of how it all works until you actually see it for yourself. on the outside we all look so modern now but the design of our bodies inside is so ancient and complex. it's incredible. it really made me think about where we come from and question my whole belief system. one thing that was disturbingly absent was any thorough explanation of where any of these preserved bodies actually came from in the first place. that's another issue entirely and one i'm not sure i particularly want to dwell on.
i'm off to a press screening tonight for a film review i'm doing. it's my very first one. i'm super duper excited about it. maybe there will be some cute, witty journalist types there. i wish i didn't have such a weakness for them.
