Researching teaching in a public school in England and it sounds pretty awful. I talked on the phone today with a woman from a recruitment agency and she said that teachers here who specialize in EBD and other behavioral problems--have worked in alternative schools are still culture shocked by the public schools in England. What's the problem?
It sounds like teachers are often assaulted or bullied by students because they have a different policy over there--they don't suspend students. Also, they don't fail students. The teacher does not have much power over a student's destiny. The school looses significant money when they suspend. Because of this, new teachers are often blamed for student's behavior issues so that the school can avoid taking action.
The titles of the forums are: Help - everything's overwhelming me! Help Nightmare year 8 class! Behavior management - help!! Starting to feel exhausted!!!! I hate my class! Assaulted, seriously had enough - dreading next lesson Behavior: at wit's end. and TEACHER SUICIDES
Hmmmmmmmmmm---so basically I would be teaching in an alternative school without it being acknowledged--and with sucky administration. I'm thinking about it. I think I might just do it anyway, although, like the women who I am reading at the Blogspot--when someone assaults me, I cry and seek support. Sucky administration is the thing that is THE WORST to me.
I think I better put my application in to the Osseo Desegregation school district here, and continue thinking about it. I still really want to go, but I don't want to deal with Devil children trying to oppress me.
It sounds like teachers over there know their rights and sometimes bring the police in to charge students with harassment and attempt to get around the administration. The administrations over there don't always suck quite so badly---but most new teachers have to deal with some form of harassment, it sounds like.
