I didn't do one of these last year, because I was feeling so miserable about my writing that I didn't want to think about it.
The numerical output from this year's not much better - actually substantially less than last year - but I have a cautious hope that things are going to improve, thanks to the Introduction to Fiction Writing class I took this fall. It's helped me to understand what I'm doing wrong, and how to fix it, I think. It's also been helpful to get critique on specific pieces. And I think it's re-energized my muse a little bit. I find I'm looking at things with more of a writer's eye than I have for a while.
I'm taking Intermediate Fiction Writing starting next week. It'll be a bit of a challenge to juggle that and teaching and work and everything else, but I think I have to take the opportunity to take it while I can. Things may have changed in my job by next fall and I might not be able to take it then. So, one of my New Year's goals will be to be better organized and use my time more wisely.

Works in progress (I'm hoping posting these will help spur me to finishing them):
untitled sequel to Song of the Rolling Earth (the Pony Express story) - I'm about 5,000 words into this. I wrote about 3,500 words for my fiction writing class; it was my final story.
Prospect (see above) - I have vague ideas of this turning into a "fuck or die" scenario, but nothing's really grabbed me yet.
What Peace There May Be In Silence (also see above) - this was one of my earliest ideas in TS, and I'm starting to feel like I may have the chops to pull it off. Writing part of it for my class got me interested in it again.
Love Is Stronger Than Justice - a long Sherlock (BBC) story I've been working on since seeing the first season; it's over 11,000 words right now, but it's kind of in pieces. Slash, John/Sherlock, post-The Great Game. Which means that it's going to be Jossed tomorrow evening. I've posted two chapters on
sherlockbbc. The last post got no comments, though, so either it really stinks or people are too focused on Series Two to be interested in old stuff. I've got it all plotted out, so even if no one likes it I'm going to finish it. Hopefully I won't get too distracted by the new eps. :-)
I'm not sure whether my resolution not to do any challenges helped or not. I think, challenges or no, had I not taken that class I'd be in the same position this year as last. But I really didn't have time to do anything extra when I was taking the class, so I'm not sure whether I'll sign up for anything this year or not. I guess it'll depend on how much work the intermediate class is and how much I think I could write for both the class and the challenge.
