Harry Potter and the Minnesotan With the Dead Eyes
ABC has been showing the Harry Potter films on Saturday nights; last night was The Order of the Phoenix. This is possibly still my favorite, with possibly the most detestable villain of the series--Dolores Umbridge. I think Umbridge is so easy to hate because she is possibly the most plausible of Rowling's villains. We all know someone who, in the workplace or the community or, sure, the government, gets away with murder by putting on a sweet and socially acceptable face to cover their festering hate-poisoned soul. If the Umbridges of the world were noseless, mass-murdering ghouls like Voldemort they'd be acceptable targets for all sorts of attacks, but since they wear the camouflage of respectability, it's sometimes difficult to even get other people to acknowledge that these people are dangerous; it's even harder to convince them to take action against an Umbridge.
