My Father's Ghost by Suzy McKee Charnas. I'm a fan of Charnas's
Holdfast Chronicles, and so when this came out a few years ago I picked up a copy. In contrast to most of her other work, My Father's Ghost is nonfiction, memoir really, the story of living with her estranged, aging, and somewhat indigent father through the last twenty-odd years of his life. Robinson McKee was an eccentric painter, but one who seems never to have quite lived up to his own standards and saw little success; as a result, this book has two faces, one showing a meditation on aging and elder care, and another showing the potential consequences of the artistic tendency to position oneself outside of society. I found it a pretty sad book, but also a brave and necessary one.
